Sakharpuda Pooja Sakharpuda Pooja is one of the very essential Poojas for Maharashtrian marriage, often performed just a few weeks or months after the Kelvan. Sakharpuda is an engagement ceremony which is performed just slightly before the actual wedding takes place. It is essentially the first pooja in wedding celebrations. As a part of the ceremony in the pooja, members of the families of both, bride and groom feed each other sugar, and celebrate the union. This is symbolic of a sweet ceremony, following which, the marriage ceremony takes place. Ritualistically, the prayers are completed in the mornings. An auspicious day is chosen for the pooja. And as per the traditions, friends, family, relatives and well wishers of the family come together for the ceremony, which most often is at the bride's place, or could be at a location mutually agreed upon by both families for the Sakharpuda ceremony. As a part of the ceremony, bride and groom exchange engagement rings. This marks the beginning of an all new relationship between two families, such that the marriage is confirmed. Here the groom is expressed to be a man of character and learning. The girl's parents invite the groom voluntarily, and receive him respectfully, without expecting anything in return. It is this form of marriage which has been described in the Rig Veda, such as the marriage of Surya and Soma. Once united in holy matrimony, the union is made lasting such that the nuptials impart sanctity to the marital relation. A Hindu marriage is a religious institution, such that the divine element prevails in a marriage. Physical conditions of the bride and groom are subject to change, but the permanent relationship is bound together by the divine element.
